Family
Joseph C. Gee married Sarah A.B. Newman 13 August 1829 in Orange County, Virginia.
Joseph Gee’s parents: Joshua Gee & Rosa Porter
Sarah Newman’s parents: William Newman & Ann Finnell
Joseph and Sarah did not have any children. They raised their nieces and nephews, Laura, James, Rosanna, Marcella, Josephine. They were the orphaned children of William Gee and his wife Mary. Several of Joseph’s brothers moved to Davidson County, Tennessee together.
This blog post is about Joseph Gee and his family. The write up said Sarah disappeared a few years in 1860. She was in Orange County on the 1860 Census, settling a court case about her father’s estate, William Newman. She was listed as the head of household with her brother Fountain Newman, a retired carpenter, and John Hansford, a carpenter and his wife Lully.

Mrs. SARAH A. B. GEE born Orange Co., N.C. Jan. 31, 1799; died Davidson Co., Tenn. May 11, 1874; dau William and Ann Newman; md Jo C. Gee, Aug. 13, 1829; owner of the celebrated Gee Hotel, 8 miles from Nashville on the Gallatin Road; her husband died 27 years ago. (Error, should say born Orange County, Virginia)
Sarah A. B. Newman was buried with her husband Joseph Gee in Springfield Cemetery. Her brother Charles Newman, and her niece Anna Newman (daughter of Abner) are also on the same burial monument. (See monument on Findagrave, section 5 of the cemetery.)
Estate
Joseph C. Gee’s will was written 27 November 1847 and probated in Davidson County, Tennessee. Will Book 14, page 161, inventory page 187.
Enslaved Individuals
The following enslaved individuals were listed in Joseph Gee’s inventory in 1847. We don’t know whether any of these people were born in Tennessee or came from where the Gee’s lived in Madison County, Virginia. We also do not know of any family relationships.

Land
Sarah and Joseph moved to Davidson County, Tennessee and ran Gee’s Tavern located in Pleasant Hill. Sarah continued to run the tavern after Joseph Gee’s death. After the tavern burned in 1856, Sarah rebuilt it and sold off some of her land to pay for it. She also received her inheritance from her father at this time.
