Old Rappahannock, the earliest settlers

Big research projects take awhile to do well and as accurately as possible. So here’s a brief update to let you know what we’re working on getting ready to share.

This past year Wade, Anne and I have done a lot of research on the first immigrating families, with land patents beginning a few years before Old Rappahannock County formed. Most of the neighboring families of Elias Newman and his parents were descendants of these immigrating families: Catlet, Rowzee, North, Tomlin, Taylor, Moseley, Moss, and Willson.

We’re actively adding many sources and notes into NewmanRoots.com tree on FamilySearch, which is separate from the collaborative tree. Some older source links were to Ancestry.com. They are being switched over to FamilySearch links, so they are free for everyone to view. I’m also working on creating a simplified chart to show those few founding families mentioned above, and how closely they are connected by marriages. Studying these early neighboring families can help us find missing family members and women’s maiden names.

See our new Old Rappahannock history page, where the chart will go when it’s ready.
