Gee’s Tavern

William Newman and Ann Finnell’s daughter, Sarah Newman, married Joseph Gee and moved to Davidson County, Tennessee. Her brother Charles Newman and a few nieces and nephews also moved to the area. A large number of Elias Newman’s grandchildren began moving west in the early 1800’s. Some of the men went to Kentucky soon after the Revolutionary War, while it was still part of the state of Virginia. This time period is much more challenging to track people in records. It is also where many mistakes are made in genealogy trees, since there are multiple people with the same name, close in age, often reported to be just one person. Julie has been following people on the tax records, because men were taxed for themselves, based on their residence. We’re trying to see the year men moved and also show multiple men on taxes with the same name, to account for each person. We’re brainstorming ways to show this early migration out of Virginia, and which people belong to which branch of the Newman family tree.

Here’s Sarah Newman’s page.

  1. Looking for anything on the Newman migration to Georgia, particularly Daniel.

    1. Thank you for letting us know about Daniel Newman. I haven’t seen him yet, but am making a note to keep an eye out for Newmans moving to Georgia.
