Newman Virginia Roots

I have temporarily paused sharing family pages, in order to do more research that could impact our results. We are trying to better understand certain factors of life during the colonial time period, like:

• At what age did people attend school in Virginia?
• What kind of education did our Newman friends and family have?
• What was considered wealthy in Virginia?
• What ages did people really marry at in Virginia?

We’ve been working on write ups about Virginia marriage records and how we’re estimating ages when no ages were given on the records, such as with deeds. Of course, research and genealogy are never finished, and neither are we. But even so, today I wanted to share the first part of our marriage study. We’ve gone though hundreds of records and found 29 couples that we could find both the birth date for both the bride and the groom, and also the marriage date. This information is very difficult to find, yet important to know. Records such as bishops’ transcripts and colonial marriage records were among casualties of records that were destroyed or lost during the American Civil War. I’ve recently learned the Glebe House for Vaughter’s Church in Essex is still standing. My husband and I will go take pictures of it soon and share them on this website.
